Do You Want Allah to Forgive Your Future Sins?

‘Ali ibn Abu Talib رضى الله عنه (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

“…The last thing he [Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (may Allah send Blessings and Peace upon him)] would say (in his prayer) between the tashahhud and the tasleem would be:

‘O Allah, forgive me for what I have done in the past and for what I am yet to do (in the future), for what I have done privately and for what I have done publicly, for what I have transgressed (i.e. my excesses) and for that which You know more than me. You are the One who brings forward and the One who puts behind, and there is no god worthy of worship except You.’” [Sahih Muslim (771)]

Say this du‘a in your prayer. The sunnah is to make it the last thing you ask from Allah in your prayer before saying the salam.

Satan will always tempt us to commit sins. Fortunately, by the Mercy of Allah, we have the upper hand over our enemy, Satan. We have the advantage over Satan because we are insured by Allah that He will forgive us if we slip into sin. Have certainty in this insurance (du‘a) that it will definitely cover our future sins.

Make it a habit to practise this sunnah that was practised by our Prophet ﷺ himself although he is Ma’soom (free from sins). Defeat our enemy, Satan, even before he begins his daily job. Have assurance in this du‘a that Allah, Al-Ghaffaar, Al-Ghafoor, will definitely forgive our sins even before we commit them.

I pray that Allah guide us to adhere strictly to Al-Quran and As-Sunnah, to study them as much as possible, and to avoid all practices that have no basis in the teachings of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. I pray that He protect us from being influenced by the Ahlul-Bid’ah (the innovators) that are prevalent in our Ummah. I also pray that Allah increase us in beneficial knowledge, grant us enthusiasm in seeking it, and bestow upon us the true understanding of the pure teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Aameen.
