‘Ruqyah’ is the practice of treating illnesses through Qur’anic verses, and invocations prescribed by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (may Allah send Blessings and Peace upon him). It is a means of cure for evil eye, sihr, jinn possession and physical ailments.
The best way of treating yourself from evil eye and sihr is to recite the prescribed verses from Al-Qur’an and invocations from As-Sunnah by yourself. For jinn possession, it is required that a Raaqee (someone who performs ruqyah) recites the incantations on the possessed person. This Raaqee must be able to recite the Qur’an well and understand its meanings, has a sound aqeedah (creed), does righteous deeds and is of upright conduct to use ruqyah. He must have a good intention; wanting to benefit the fellow Muslim brother he is performing ruqyah upon, and he should not only be concerned with money or payment.
Do not be deceived by ruqyah practitioners who claim to practice “Ruqyah Syar‘iyyah” but sell commercial products falsely promoted as cures for sihr, jinn possession, or illnesses caused by the evil eye, such as bottled water over which Qur’anic verses and salawat have been recited for drinking and bathing, bidara spray mist, bidara shower gel, and the like. In reality, the products they sell do not help in healing us at all.
Most of them are in fact people of innovation (bid’ah) who label themselves as practitioners of Ruqyah Syar’iyyah. They use verses that are not legislated from the Qur’an and the Sunnah when performing ruqyah, and they charge high fees (unreasonable price) for their services. They deceive the public by selling commercial ruqyah products that are not in accordance with the Sunnah; misleading them into believing that these products are the source of their healing. Know that purchasing such products and believing in them as a means of cure is considered an act of shirk.
True Ruqyah Syar’iyyah practitioners are those who adhere firmly to the methodology of the Salaf, only use incantations based on the Qur’an and the Sunnah, and they do not sell products that contradict the Sunnah while labelling them as ruqyah.
Allah is Ash-Shaafee; the One Who Cures, the Healer. Trust and rely on Allah, and know that performing ruqyah on yourself (if you are able to) by reciting the prescribed verses from Al-Qur’an and As-Sunnah is sufficient for your cure. You may also recite these verses over water, then drink from it and use the remainder for bathing.
