IF YOU THINK ALLAH HAS ONLY 99 NAMES, THEN YOU ARE WRONG

The Authentic Names of Allah in Al-Quran and As-Sunnah

The ninety-nine Names of Allah (Asmaa’ul-Husnaa) mentioned in the popular nasheed that most likely you have heard, learnt or memorised are sourced from da’eef (weak) hadiths such as Jami’ at-Tirmidhi (3507) and Sunan Ibn Majah (3861); listing some names that are not explicitly derived from Al-Quran and As-Sunnah. It has not been authentically established that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (may Allah send Blessings and Peace upon him) specified all of those ninety-nine names. The hadiths which has been reported about this are unauthentic. Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله wrote in his book Majmoo’ al-Fatawa (6/382):

“Those names being specifically mentioned (in the hadiths above) are not from the speech of the Prophet ﷺ, as agreed upon by the scholars of hadith.”

In Fathul-Bari (11/215), Ibn Hajar رحمه الله explained that Imam Bukhari رحمه الله and Imam Muslim رحمه الله rejected this hadith [Jami’ at-Tirmidhi (3507)], not only because it was related through just one person, namely al-Waleed ibn Muslim; but also because of other inconsistencies in the narration, in addition to the possibility of additional wordings added to the narration. Therefore, the scholars who follow as-Salafus-Salih (the Pious Predecessors, the first and best three generations of the followers of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) have disagreed on the names that should be contained in that hadith.

Scholars have agreed that the Names of Allah are not limited to only ninety-nine. In fact, the Names of Allah mentioned in Al-Quran and As-Sunnah number over a hundred. No one knows the actual number of Allah’s Names. This is based on the saying of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

“I ask You by every name that is Yours; by which You have named Yourself, or taught anyone of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or kept in the knowledge of the unseen that is with You.” [Musnad Ahmad (3712), Sahih Ibn Hibban (972) and Sheikh al-Albani’s Silsilah al-Ahaadeeth as-Saheehah (199)]

We, of course, have no way of knowing or counting those names that Allah has kept exclusively for Himself.

As stated in the book of Sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih al-‘Uthaymeen رحمه الله, ‘al-Qawaa‘idul-Muthlaa Fee Sifaatil-laahi Ta’aalaa wa Asmaa’ihil-Husnaa’ (The Exemplary Principles Concerning the Attributes of Allah, the Exalted, and His Beautiful Names); one might argue that Allah has only ninety-nine names based on the saying of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

In reality, this hadith does not indicate that Allah has only ninety-nine names. Had that be the intended meaning, the wording of the hadith would have been: “Allah has a total of ninety-nine names” or similar wording which points to a finite number. Therefore, the correct meaning of the hadith is as follows: “In regard to the ninety-nine of Allah’s Names, if one enumerates them, he will enter Paradise.” A similar statement is for you to say: “I have with me one hundred dirham that I have set aside for charity.” This statement of yours does not mean that you have only one hundred dirham, or that you do not have other money which you have set aside, for instance, in your bank account. Hence, this rationalise that Allah has more than ninety-nine names.

If we were to count the Names of Allah that are mentioned in both Al-Quran and As-Sunnah, they will number over a hundred. Among them are ninety-nine names which, if one memorises, learns and lives by them, will bring the reward of entering Paradise as stated in the hadith above.

The Most Appreciative
ش ك ر
Ash-Shakoor is the One Who gives abundantly in response to little. He appreciates even the small deeds with an unlimited appreciation; the ultimate example is the reward of never-ending happiness in His Paradise. He is the One Who rewards abundantly and multiplies the rewards of His obedient servants for their deeds; deeds which He himself favoured them with; deeds which He Himself granted to them; the One Who does not allow any of their deeds to be lost. He recognises and rewards those who give thanks to Him and remembers the one who remembers Him. Whosoever seeks to get close to Him by doing any righteous action, He will draw closer to him by a greater degree.

The Truthful
ص د ق
As-Saadiq is the One Who is truthful in His promises and warnings, and in everything He says. There is no doubt that He has promised those who are obedient that He would reward them, and those who ask Him that He would answer them. He is the Truthful One Who never breaks His promise. One of the effects of believing in this name is that the doer of good deeds does not fear injustice or oppression from Him, nor does he fear deprivation or hardship, or that even an atom’s weight will be lost from him, because Allah, the Exalted, has promised, and He is the Truthful, to reward those who work, even if it is only an atom’s weight, that He will not neglect it, but will multiply it for whom He wills and give him a great reward from Himself. As for the wrongdoer, He will recompense him with an evil like it, and He will only remove the evil from him through repentance, remorse, forgiveness, good deeds, and misfortunes.

The Delayer, The One Who Puts Back

It is He Who sends down events, expediting or delaying them as He wills, in accordance with His decree which came before He created all things. Al-Mu’akhkhir keeps down those whom He wills to lower ranks and He postpones things from their expected times because in His wisdom, He knows the consequences of the delay.

السِّتِّير
(As-Sitteer)

The Concealer, The Coverer
س ت ر
As-Sitteer is the One Who covers and conceals according to His wisdom. He is the One who can conceal the biggest of sins, faults, and shortcomings whenever and for whomever He likes. He loves to conceal and protect, so He conceals many of the sins and faults of His servants, and He hates ugliness, scandals, and their public display. He does not expose His servant when he openly disobeys Him, but rather covers him with His veil, for He is the Concealer and the Forgiver. He, Blessed and Exalted, has commanded concealment and dislikes boasting about sin, or even merely loving to mention it and spreading it among the believers.

He provides for His servants for two purposes; firstly, as a favour from Him for the test of gratitude, and secondly, to call them towards obedience, goodness and benevolence. Ar-Raaziq provides two types of sustenance for His servants. Firstly, the general sustenance that includes the righteous and the wicked, the believer and the disbeliever, the first and the last, and it is the sustenance of the bodies. Secondly, the special or specific sustenance, which is the sustenance of the hearts and nourishing them with knowledge, faith, and lawful sustenance that helps in the improvement and righteousness of their religion. This is specifically for the believers according to their ranks from Him, depending on His wisdom and mercy. He fulfills His honor to them and bestows His grace upon them by admitting them into the Gardens of Bliss on the Day of Resurrection.
